In this part of southern Ontario, Sixteen-Mile Creek cuts through an exposed outcrop of the Queenston Formation, a layer of rocks laid down during the Upper Ordovician age. The reddish colour in the shale is due to oxidization while the greenish colour is due to reduction, likely from exposure to acidic groundwater.
