Human impacts
Sixteen-Mile Creek, which runs through Glenorchy Conservation Area on the north side of Highway 407 in Oakville, Ontario, is heavily affected by what happens on the lands through which it flows. Erosion results in high sediment loads. Nutrients applied on farmer's fields, golf courses and residential properties contribute to algae growth. Urban detritus, from small bits of garbage that are carried along by the water, to large chunks of concrete that somehow ended up in the valley, are everywhere. Invasive plants such as Giant Hogweed, have not taken over the valley yet, but they're spreading. The area is also heavily used by illegal all terrain vehicle riders, whose trails cut through the shoreline vegetation and criss-cross the stream at multiple locations.
